According to a paper published March 21, 2016 by PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences), 8 percent of our DNA is ”alien” and made up of nonhuman viral fragments.
The study is ”Discovery of Unfixed Endogenous Retrovirus Insertions in Diverse Human Populations.”
The study came from the Department of Human Genetics, University of Michigan, and the Department of Molecular Biology and Microbiology, Tufts University School of Medicin. After they studied 2 500 people, they discovered that our DNA is less human and that 19 pieces of ancient viral DNA exist in our own genome.
